Jim welcomes you to his 1953 detached bungalow with cavity walls and a slate roof, retrofitted to AECB Carbon Light Retrofit standard (almost “Enerphit”)It has been rebuilt with a new first floor to the main part and a more affordable upgrade to an attached studio part. It's at first-fix stage so lots of details that you can still see!

Modifications:

  • External wall insulation and internal wall insulation
  • “ Warmcel”roof insulation
  • Triple glazed
  • Solar panels - both integrated and surface mounted
  • ASHP
  • Detailed air tightness
  • MVHR (mechanical ventilation with heat recovery)
  • Rain water recycling
  • Roof slates made of 90% recycled polypropylene

Air test results: 0.8 air changes per hour @ 50 Pascals.

Motivation to retrofit:
We want to live with minimal impact. We built to passive house standard before and found it just so comfortable and pleasant. Future proof low cost living.

Approximate cost:
Main part, quite a bit more than standard build. The lower upgrade part, quite affordable. I will have some figures soon, work is on going at present.

Who did the work?
Direct labour and various sub contractors.

Approximate energy savings:
Still building but anticipate a max of 2.75kw heating at -5 outside and 21 degrees internally.

Benefits:
Not lived in yet but from past experiences it will be very comfortable and low cost living.

Next steps:
Maybe build a conservatory’ sun room.
