Other Turn up for house tours at given times
David and Vanessa welcome you to their rural detached renovated and extended 19th century cottage.
Modifications:
Ground source heat pump and solar pv with battery, ev charger, iBoost, oil fired aga replaced with electric range. Switch to 2 rate tariff and load switch to minimise cost. Replace all single glazed windows.
Motivations to make changes:
To move to renewable energy sources, move away from oil fired heating and help optimise grid balancing by load switching.
Approximate costs:
Approx £10k net cost after RHI for heating. ~ £13k for PV, battery and EV charger
Approximate energy savings:
Considerable energy savings for Power/Heating/Cooking reduced from 26 MWh (Oil/Power) to around 4 MWh (Power) per annum
£ savings variable with power and oil price variation. As power prices rise heat pump savings drop but solar PV savings rise. Large benefit from tariff switch and load switching utilising battery increase heat pump savings considerably.
Benefits:
Heat Pump saves over 3 tonnes CO2 per annum. PV also saved over a tonne and switching to electric cooking almost another tonne.
More consistent heating level with "background" heating from heat pump.
Ability to utilise cheap overnight tariffs with battery to dramatically reduce electricity costs by load switching. During summer ALL power costs 7p/kWh including for EV. Lower average import rates during winter. Overall tariff saving utilising battery and load switching > £1,100 in 2024.
Next steps:
Minor insulation improvements and looking at increasing battery capacity and enabling off grid operation in the event of power failure.
