Other Turn up for house tours at given times
Nigel welcomes you to his rubblestone home in Linton. With a slate roof it was converted from redundant agricultural building in 1996. They have web access to most data so you can see real life information.
Modifications:
- Solar pv with FiT tariff plus additional pv panels not part of FiT
- Pylontec battery back up system
- Air source heat pump - with micro bore CH
- Mixergy hot water tank
- Pod point ev charging point
- Roof insulation - kingpin + blown cellulose fibre
- Internal wall insulation
- Smart Meter with Octopus Mini
Motivation to retrofit:
To avoid fossil fuels and reduce our carbon impact.
We had a survey through Future Ready Homes and some of these measures came from that.
Approximate cost:
ASHP @ £14K less £7.5K grant. Battery @ £5k
Approximate savings:
PV with FiT has paid for itself.
We have not costed out savings as this was not the reason why we made changes.
Benefits:
> More comfortable and controllable heating
> Much improved and efficient hot water
> Virtually self sufficient in electricity in the summer including EV
> Ability to utilise octopus agile tariff
Who did the work:
Tipsgrove Eco Ltd who we'd recommended - they very flexible and engaged.
Next steps and considerations:
> Solar room to capture and retain southern sun
> Upgrade windows to triple glazed
> Improve integration of technologies
> Further improve internal insulation
> Retrofit heat recovery and ventilation
Considered a bio mass boiler and thermal store for heating but this would require more space. A hybrid gas/ASHP running on bio gas was also rejected due to lack of outside space and no grant to help with costs.
