Annabelle and James welcome you to their new build timber frame passive house and Enerphit insulated stone barn (work in progress).

This is a recently completed self-build home. They are still learning how to optimise management of some of the technology but are happy to share what they know so far.

Modifications:
Recycled newspaper insulation in I-beam construction, ASHP, MVHR, UFH, triple glazed, led lighting, all electric, diathonite insulation in stone barn (in progress).

Motivation to retrofit:
Personal comfort, sustainability and cost of running.

Approximate cost:
Still counting. Breakdown of some elements available.

Benefits:
Comfort, running cost.

Who did the work:
Mike Whitfield Construction - who is aiming to be at the open day for questions
Others: Gary Price (ground work), Geolec (electrics), Green Building Store (windows / doors), Alan Clarke (heating and ventilation consultant), Nick Grant (PH consultant),Charles Grylls (architect) and Ecological Building Systems

All recommended.

Next steps and considerations:
  • Shading - time to establish planting
  • PV and battery - budget
  • EV point - cost of EVs
Considered but rejected GSHP and renewables due to cost benefit, and water recycling due to cost.
